North Carolina real estate email signature requirements

North Carolina's advertising rule does not mention email signatures. It requires a broker's advertising to include the firm name, and says an ad may not be only contact information such as an email address. It does not require a license number.

Regulator: NC Real Estate Commission. Summarized from the rule text and official guidance linked below, as of September 28, 2026. Not legal advice.

Does the rule cover email?

  • Rule 21 NCAC 58A .0105 never defines “advertisement” and never names email as a medium. It does list an “e-mail address” as an example of contact information.
  • Paragraph (a)(1) says a broker may not advertise brokerage services or real estate for others without including the name of the firm or sole proprietorship the broker is affiliated with.
  • Paragraph (b) (“blind ads”) says an ad may not consist only of contact information such as an e-mail address; it must show that it is the ad of a broker or firm.
  • Whether a plain signature counts as an “advertisement” is not answered by the rule. A signature is mostly contact information, so including the firm name is the safe reading.

Is a license number required?

  • The rule does not require a license number, and we found nothing in the Commission's bulletins requiring one in advertising or signatures.

Team names

  • The Commission's team guidance says team advertising must always include the name of the brokerage. Its example is “The Bill Starr Team of XYZ Realty.”
  • It also says a team name that is branding only does not need to be registered as an assumed name.

Anything specific to signatures

  • We found no Commission guidance that mentions email signatures. A December 2025 Commission bulletin on advertising compliance discusses social media (firm name must be in the ad itself, not just the profile) but not email.

A practical checklist

Our reading of the rules above, not language from any rule. Your broker-in-charge has the final say.

  • Show the firm's name next to your name and contact details.
  • If you use a team name, show the brokerage name with it.
  • Have your broker-in-charge confirm the final wording.

What we could not confirm

  • The rule's history note shows amendments through July 1, 2021. We could not confirm there is no later amendment; check the Commission's current rule.
